Frequently Asked Questions

Why soy wax?

Soy waxes, along with other vegetable waxes are a renewable fuel source that is literally “grown” in America. Our soy wax contains no animal fats, fillers or chemicals. This natural wax replaces paraffin, which is the left over residue of petroleum refining. Soy wax is water-soluble, non-toxic and biodegradable--paraffin wax is not. Paraffin wax contains 11 documented toxins--two are carcinogenic (toluene and benzene).

Soybean base vegetable waxes burn cleaner with no petroleum soot emissions and lessens our dependence on foreign oil while creating meaningful livelihoods for US farmers and local artisans. Our wax comes from sustainable agricultural sources and it is even edible-- though we don’t recommend it!

Can Fireplace be used anywhere else?

Of course! You can use it in other areas the house just like a traditional candle - its mesmerizing flickering away in a bedroom, on a mantle or on a table. It is also great during a power outage with its illumination equivalent of 20-lit candles and if necessary, it can even cook food!

If used indoors the wick needs to be cut shorter - 1/8 of an inch and we do not recommend letting it burn more than 1 ½ hours at a time before extinguishing and re-trimming the wick. Additionally it can be used outdoors at picnics, camping and even in Kiva (outdoor fireplaces) due to its wind and water resistance. Never trim a wick while the candle is lit or when the wax is still liquid!

Why do you use organic products?

Certified organic products are clean, pure and unadulterated-- just the way nature intended! Simply put, organic agriculture eliminates the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, hormones, antibiotics or chemical fertilizers. Additionally, certified organic products are not irradiated and do not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Organic agriculture is an ecological production management system that promotes and enhances biodiversity, biological cycles and soil biological activity. It is based on minimal use of outside inputs and on management practices that restore, maintain and enhance ecological harmony.

The concept of certified organics promote stewardship of the land, concern for the health of the soil and the relationship to the surrounding natural habitat—plants, animal and people. Organic farmers work with nature to provide sustainable harvests for generations to come.

Are your glass decanters hand-made?

Yes! They are hand-crafted in Poland thus creating jobs there as well as here. In addition, we want to “think globally but act locally” so we are working with a small company to have many of our new decanters made in the U.S. entirely out of colored recycled glass!

This will make our product a collectable because every finished container will be a unique in color and shape -- do to the different glass inputs. Additionally, that company donates 100% of its profits to handicapped children’s charities.

Are your glass decanters refillable?

Yes, you can order our candle “inserts” on the product page of the website. Then simply clean out any of the old wick, wick base and gently let the inserts slide in place. Since all the containers and candle are hand-made, they vary in size and shape, so if they don’t slip in place, use a butter knife and shave off any high spots in the wax or heat up your oven to 200 degrees, place the glass container in for about 5 minutes. Remove from the oven and place the refills in the appropriate spots and they will literally "melt" into place!. Never force a candle insert into the container--it will break the glass!

How long will my FirePlace Candle burn?

Well, that depends on a number of factors. We recommend that you burn the candle no longer than 3 hours at one time. When cool, break or cut the wick to ¼ in above the wax surface for Fireplace and outdoor use, or 1/8 in. for indoor use. This will allow the candle to burn approximately 14-26 hours. Burn time is effected primarily by the size of the wick--the bigger it --the faster the wax is burned.

Why are some of your wicks made with hemp?

Hemp wicks tend to stand up in the “melt pool” better than cotton. Also hemp based cloth products are natural, cleaner, and stronger yet requiring little no pesticides or fertilizers to grow. By comparison, cotton is the most heavily sprayed commercial crop in the world.

How do you light the big wick?

The best way is just light either end of each wick-- once ignited the flame will just travel across the entire surface of the wick surface in a few minutes.

Isn’t hemp marijuana?

Apparently that is what certain people in the government, petrochemical and pharmaceutical industry would like you to think--and they have a vested interest perpetuating this myth since hemp can replace many of their patented products with natural solutions. Industrial hemp is what we are talking about, not pot or marijuana. These are two vastly different species of plants--though in the same category. Many people do not know the difference between hemp and marijuana, but hemp is not psychoactive. The psychoactive element of marijuana—THC--exists in hemp, but in amounts so small it’s insignificant. The same relationship exists with the common poppy seeds found on your hamburger bun verses poppy seeds used to make the drug opium--- both come from the same plant family but are totally different. Another example would be the difference between a house cat and a mountain lion--both are in the cat family but few would argue their physical and psychological differences! Today, industrial hemp is cultivated in Canada, China, Russia, Hungary, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Spain, England, Poland and many other Eastern European countries and has to be imported in to the U.S.

Historical tradition, though not current federal law, favors the use and production of hemp. The U.S. Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the Gutenberg Bible, and Old Glory (our nation's flag) and the original Levi Straus jeans were all made from hemp, as was the favorite fuel of Henry Ford, clothes worn by George Washington, lamp oil used by Abraham Lincoln and the paints and canvas used by Van Gogh, Rembrandt and others. Hemp covered the Westward-bound wagons, the tall sailing ships, biplanes and zeppelins. The parachute that saved George Bush's life in World War II was made of hemp fiber. Hemp is the world's top renewable resource for fuel, paper, cloth, and paint, plastics, protein, soap, oil and over 25,000 other products.
